What are the current trends in window treatments?

Remodeling your home can be a fun, but stressful occasion. You and your significant other may have differing opinions about what would be best, what colors to paint, what kind of furniture to buy, what has the best resale value, what works better, etc. Whether or not these are contentious topics, they are still very important ones. You want your home to look as good as it possibly can, while remaining affordable and efficient. Maybe your current discussions are revolving around window treatments. You're wondering to yourself "what are the current trends in window treatments?"

Well. What are they? First, let's talk about what a window treatment is. They can be anything from curtains to drapes to valances. Let's go over a few of these in a little more depth.

1. Curtains/Drapes: We all know what curtains are. They're the lovely pieces of cloth that hang down from above your window to block out the light. But did you know that you can find them in just about every style, color, fabric, and length?
2. Finials: finials add the final touches to your curtains. They can be metal, marble, glass, or even wood.
3. Shades/Blinds: shades of blinds are a great option for almost any room and almost any style. They are great at keeping out light and can reveal much more of a window than curtains do. They are available in many materials and styles.
4. Valance/Swags: valances or swags are perfect option for people who have blinds, but want a little extra bling to their windows. They are excellent at framing windows and adding a bit of color to a room.

So what are the current trends in window treatments? Luckily for you, outfitting your windows has never been easier. There are many options that are very stylish that don't jump in and out of style.

One of the most popular options of today is "combination treatments," meaning using more than one type of window decoration at a time. For example, you may already have blinds on your windows, so you add a valance. Or you hang new curtains and add some finials for that final touch. Combining treatments gives you more freedom to manipulate the size and shape that people perceive your windows to be.

Another new trend is "puddling" your drapery panels. This is where the fabric from your drapes pools, or puddles, down onto the floor. It creates a lavish style in any room. Most rooms look best with puddles of 3-5 inches. These days draperies are getting longer. If you're trying to add height to a room, place your window treatments just below the ceiling line. This will give any room a lift. And just the opposite of that, draperies that stop just short of the floor can look like they are floating.

Adding color to your curtains is an up-and-coming trend. Wide colored stripes in your curtains are a trend that is easy to duplicate. Simply divide the panel's length into thirds and sew on bands of fabric. Many windows look best if the bands start and stop so that they line up with existing window features. You can jazz up a room by making these striped curtains brightly colored, or by using two-toned drapes. Another trendy way to add color is to have contrasting fabric borders on the drapery panels. Or add a contrastive lining.

Remember that just because you have swags on two windows in a room doesn't mean that the other three windows must match. Feel free to coordinate, not match, your window treatments. And have fun. After all, it's about what you feel comfortable around, not just what the trend is.
