What is a cookie on the internet, and should I be concerned about them?

The internet is a great tool and can be used for many good things. Unfortunately for every good thing you can do on the internet, there are also equally as many bad things that it can be used for. Many people use the internet for things such as email. They may use it to subscribe to different things or do research. These are all good things to do but you want to be careful with the information you provide these sites. You do not want to give out any information that is very personal. If you do this information can be stored on what is called a cookie.

What is a cookie on the internet?

Cookies are really not something to stress too much about. And even if you are stressed about them, you can fix that problem by disabling the cookie feature. You should not be concerned when you are simply entering information such as your name.

Cookies cannot access your hard drive. The only information that will be stored on a cookie is the information that you give them. This is why you want to be very careful when entering personal information. Anything that you enter can be saved and stored in the cookie. You should not think that this information is sent to some corporate office where corrupt men are looking at everyone's personal information so they can steal their credit card numbers. The cookie takes the information from the web server and sends it to the web browser in a text-only string.

Should I be concerned about them?

You should not be overly concerned about cookies. They cannot do much to you. They cannot access your hard drive nor can they spread a virus to your computer. They only thing they can do is save the information that you give them. So if you be sure to always provide safe information, you have to reason to be concerned. OR, if you are still concerned because you know that you will sometimes need to give out information that you do not want to be stored, you can disable the cookie feature on your internet. This allows you to avoid cookies all together. If a certain site has a cookie, that cookie should not have any affect you.

It is not very difficult to disable the cookie feature. You simply go into your internet options, wherever they are located, find the security settings, and change them. This is a good way to just stay safe and avoid giving out information that you do not want other people to have. You would probably want to disable the feature when you are doing things such as giving out credit card numbers. You would want to disable it when you are giving out information that is really important for you not to give out. Any other time it is probable perfectly fine.

For different servers on the internet there are things called cookies. A cookie is what a browser will use to track traffic that comes to its site. They might also use it to personalize the site for you when you get onto the site again. When you enter personal information to a site this information is saved and stored in a cookie. That is the information that would be used to personalize the page for you. For example, when you sign up for email they ask you for your name. When you come back to that page it might say something such as, "Hello (Your Name)! Welcome back!"
