Let's go through these 4 ways to look more confident, one by one.
1. Appear more confident by looking people in the eye.
One of the most important ways to express confidence through body language is simply by looking people in the eye when you talk to them, when you meet them, and when you are interacting with them.
The eyes are one of the most communicative parts of our bodies. People are impressed when you look them in the eye. Looking away from someone shows that you are nervous, shy, and not particularly confident. Looking people in the eye demonstrates power, force, ease, assurance, and confidence-all attributes that tend to make people trust you more readily. This is especially important in a work setting.
Of course, you have to be careful not to turn people off. Don't stare at them-instead, just look them steadily and calmly in the eye when talking to them. Don't watch them intently; just be normal and at ease in the situation.
2. Demonstrate greater confidence by holding your head up high.
How many times have you been to a bar and seen someone sitting there, attractive, but with their head hanging? Were you compelled to go and talk to that person? What about at work? Which coworkers and managers inspire more confidence-the ones who are constantly looking at the ground, or the ones who walk about with their head high, ready to meet the world and tackle obstacles?
If you hold your head up, you demonstrate that you are prepared to meet challenges head on. You are not afraid of the world. You are not afraid of other people. This attitude, and its physical manifestation, will inspire more people to be confident in you. You also will begin to become more confident in your own abilities as you approach the world with energy, instead of with fear or dismay.
3. Standing up straight will make you appear more confident.
Standing up straight goes hand and hand with holding your head up high. Standing up straight doesn't mean that you have to walk around like a soldier, but it does mean that you should stop slouching. Slouching conveys sloppiness, fatigue, resignation, and even fear of the world. None of these qualities inspire confidence in others, and they won't help you achieve your goals in any aspects of your life.
Work on standing up straight. Sit up straight, also. Your mother always told you that posture was important, right? When you're waiting to cross the street this is a great time to double check to ensure that you are standing up straight. When you're sitting in the subway, sit up straight. Always be aware of your posture.
4. Uncross your arms, and appear more confident.
Studies have shown that people cross their arms because they feel unsure about themselves and are unconsciously trying to protect themselves from the world around them. So don't fold your arms. Instead, put one hand in your pocket. Or both hands. It's alright to cross your arms at times, but continually folding your arms just demonstrates that you are really trying to escape and get away from where you are. It's a way of creating a barrier between yourself and the people around you. So uncross your arms, and meet the world head on.
