One of the most important things that you can do to motivate yourself and better yourself is to set goals for yourself. By setting goals for yourself, you will be determining what you want from life, which will help you to choose things that will make you happy with your life. When you decide to set goals for yourself, the one thing that you need to remember is that you need to set realistic goals. It is important to set realistic goals because if the goals are not attainable you are not going to succeed with reaching your goals.

If you are thinking about setting some realistic goals for yourself, you are going to need to know the dos and don'ts of setting goals. Knowing the dos and don'ts of setting goals means that you will be able to achieve your goals sooner rather than later.

Dos and don'ts of setting goals:

  • When determining your goals so that you can achieve them you are going to want to write down what you are going to do to meet those goals. You will want to make sure that you write down the specific steps you plan on taking to, you will also need to make sure you check off each step as you accomplish them. Never try to memorize the steps you will be taking to reach your goals because this will most likely lead to you forgetting some of the steps that are involved in reaching your goals.
  • When trying to reach your goals make sure that you maintain a positive attitude. You want t believe that you can achieve your goal. One way to keep a positive attitude about your goal is to visualize yourself reaching your goals; including visualizing what steps you will take to achieve the goal. What you want to avoid is having a negative attitude about reaching your goals, not believing that you can achieve the goals. You always want to think positive about your goals, never let a negative thought pass through your mind in regards to your goals. If you let negative thoughts come through chances are you will end up feeling overwhelmed by them and give up on achieving your dreams.
  • Provide yourself with some motivating factors so that you are more likely to achieve your goals. For example, if you are trying to lose weight provide pictures of yourself as you lose weight by taking a picture once a month in the same outfit. You want to place these motivational tools in areas that are hard to miss so you can help motivate yourself when needed. By surrounding yourself with motivating factors, you will not be able to forget why you set the goals in the first place. If you forgot why you set the goals chances are you won't be motivated to achieve them.
  • Always begin to go after your goals as soon as you have decided on a course of action. If you sit back and wait until later chances are, you won't ever get things done. Procrastinating about getting things done is going to find you sitting aside and not accomplishing anything, which will kill any motivation that you have built up.
  • You want to make sure that you share your successes with the people who are around you. Take the time to reward yourself for the things that you have achieved. By rewarding yourself and sharing your successes, you are keeping yourself motivated to continue reaching the rest of your goals. You never want to downplay your accomplishments because then you can lose your motivation. Always stay focused on your goals, don't allow yourself to get off track.
