Getting Over the New Guy Jitters

There are no more professors to tell you what to do, no more student loans to fall back on if you get in a pinch, and generally people aren't as nice as when you were in school. You're in the real world, and it can be intimidating. How do you get motivated to take the first step into the real world after you're done with school? How do you get motivated to make yourself a success in the face of opposition? Here is some practical advice to help you get motivated to go out there and face the big bad world head on.

Goals and Movement
When looking for motivation to go out and do something with your life after school, the first thing you should do is set some goals. Your goal for the last four years or more has been to get good enough grades to graduate. Congratulations! You've achieved that goal, now it's time to set some new ones. Graduation can give some people huge momentum. Keep yourself moving by setting new goals to achieve. Don't limit your momentum by setting ambiguous goals either. Give yourself a shot of movement by setting goals that you can see clearly. The clearer your goals are in your mind, the more momentum you'll have to take that first step forward on the path of success.
Do it for Someone Else
If you have a family of your own, or you're still living at home, you can move yourself along and gain tremendous motivation if you aren't just working for yourself. If you deeply desire to make mom and dad proud, or if you have a family of your own to support, nothing will stop you from taking the step into the real world beyond graduation. A support network is paramount to achieving success. If you are achieving your goals out of love for someone else and they are there behind you every step of the way, you will not loose your momentum as so many college grads do after the first rejection (or the second, or the third, etc.). Going on (being motivated) is easier when you have someone behind you or someone that depends on you.
Do it for Yourself
Just as a support network is vital to being motivated to achieve success, so is having the will power within yourself if all others fail you. If you are finding you lack motivation after you fail (and you will fail), even with your goals and support network, then you need to have a good look inside yourself. You cannot stay motivated if you aren't getting something out of it. If all you see is your own failure, you'll loose your motivation quicker than quick. Look for success within you and keep going for your own good. When you fail, lose motivation, and get into a slump, you are the only one that can pull yourself out. Do yourself a favor, and know that what you are doing is for yourself.
Baby Steps
One of the most important things you can do to stay motivated in the real world is to take baby steps. With each baby step you achieve, you will have a sense of success and accomplishment which you can carry with you to keep you motivated to achieve the next baby step. When you look back, you'll see that all your little baby steps have added up to really big success, which will motivate you even further along the path to your ultimate success and the achievement of your end goals.
