Guidelines for creating a motivating work environment

workerscongradulating22989943.jpgDisengaged workers cost employers $292 billion to $355 billion each year. Almost 19-25 percent of employees are disengaged while at work. Everyone has different work priorities and different motivations. Many companies fail to take into consideration the involvement of their staff and how they can improve employee morale and employee performance.

In order to create a motivating work environment, companies must stop de-motivating their employees. Talk to each of your employees and find out what some of the actions the company is taking that causes employee morale to drop. Find a way to not only meet the needs of the company and customers, but to meet the needs of your staff members as well. Disengaged workers are also less loyal to their employers and they miss 2 times the amount of work as their satisfied co-workers.

One of the easiest ways to help your employees stay motivated is to establish some rules. It is easier for people to know how to perform their job duties is they understand the expectations of the company. There are company handbooks that normally outline all the rules, but hardly anyone reads them. Create a policy for every question your employees may have and put them on the company system. Then when an employee has a question, they know right where to find the answer. It's a small way to remove any confusion your employees may have about their jobs.

In order to establish effective policies, ask your employees for input. Make sure the policies you incorporate are fair and consistent to each of your employees. Develop some guidelines for supervisors so they know how to deal with each of your employees. Make sure there are not inconsistencies in different departments, like one supervisor being known as softy and the other being known as strict.

Employees want to work for a well-organized company. By having rules clearly laid-out, you eliminate confusion and frustration in the office. The expectations are clear and people know what they need to do in order to get recognized from their supervisors. When everyone lives by the same rules, employee creativity thrives and employees are likely to remain loyal for several years.

Rules help people remain on-task. When they know gossip, back-biting, unhappiness, and unrest are not promoted in the office, it is easier for them to focus on being productive and successful.

A simple way to improve employee motivation is to provide them with feedback. People need to know if they are doing a good job and if their work is helping the company to become successful. When employees continue to work without feedback, it often leads to de-motivation because they feel like the work they are doing is just busy work and the company doesn't actually use it. This makes it hard for some of the employees to get excited about large assignments or sitting on committees.

Involve your employees in the company. Ask them if they are comfortable taking charge of projects. Some people will refuse to tackle large projects because of past experience with employers where they were punished for their bad decisions. To avoid this from happing, always provide your employees with all the necessary tools they need in order to perform their job duties. Make sure you always reward and recognize your employees for their hard work. This will help to motivate other employees to work hard so they can receive the same recognition.

Show your employees that you have faith in their ability to make decisions by assigning them some hard projects. Let them prove to the company and to themselves that they have what it takes to be a hard-working employee and possibly gain a promotion in the future. Giving them a little responsibility is one of the best ways to reward them and to challenge them at the same time.
