How do I fight depression?
Current studies indicate that a large number of Americans are suffering from depression. Some research indicates that 17 million Americans currently are suffering from and are being treated for depression. Depression is the persistent feelings of sadness, lethargy, and lack of focus that continue for at least two weeks. This is much different than the blues or feelings of sadness that affects everyone from time to time. The key to dealing with depression is finding the right treatment in a timely manner. There are a wide variety of options available to patients suffering from depression. Deciding among them can be a difficult and sometimes stressful task. Patients should consult their doctor to discuss which option will be the most effective and most likely to produce long term results. Here is a brief overview of three different options that can be used singly or together-
1. Antidepressants-While there is still many differing opinions (even in the medical community itself) there is evidence that treatment with pharmaceutical anti-depressants can be effective in helping some patients. There are many different types of anti-depressants on the market. Each anti-depressant deals with the chemical unbalance in the brain in a different manner. It is vitally important that the patient discuss all the options, possible side effects and correct use of the antidepressants before beginning any treatment. Physicians also comment that many patients do not fully complete the recommended course of treatment and then are unable to be relieved of the symptoms of depression they are being affected by. Patients must realize that treatment with anti-depressants usually has a cumulative effect and does take time. Some studies indicate that treatment with anti-depressants may take six to 12 month to show significant improvement in symptoms for those suffering from depression.

2. Therapy-A second option for those suffering from depression is to involve them in some form of therapy. For some patients this may be as simple as finding a trusted advisor or friend to confide in. A religious leader, counselor or supportive friend can be a tremendous help in these cases. For those suffering from severe cases of depression treatment by a medical professional may be necessary. A psychiatrist or psychologist can then be consulted and a course of treatment established. It is important to note here that patients should be guided to avoid those types of therapy that may not be ethical or legal. Sadly many patients suffering from depression have been preyed upon by those who may not have their best interest at heart. Family and friends can play an important role in helping the patient who is seeking treatment to gain help from a medically certified therapist who can then dispense the correct help.
3. Herbal remedies-Obviously, patients suffering from long-term or major depression should not attempt to self-medicate with herbal remedies. But there is evidence that some herbal remedies have been known to relieve minor symptoms of depression. Some of these herbal remedies are St. John's Wort, Samy, Ginkgo Biloba and others. Patients who choose this type of treatment must understand that these remedies have not been extensively studied and are not FDA regulated. It is always best to consult a physician before beginning any new course of treatment including herbal remedies or supplements.
Finally those who are being affected by depression can be helped and supported by loving and concerned family and friends. Many depressed patients can be helped by the constant reminder of support by those who care deeply about them. While the effects of depression can be life-altering by seeking treatment early, talking to your doctor and striving to get well a faster and more complete recovery can happen.
