How sleep impacts your job
Several researchers have conducted studies to determine how a night's sleep impacts employee performance at the office. One of the recent studies published found that a bad night's sleep impacts your job performance and it also makes you cranky and irritable. Employees that do not get a proper amount of rest are less likely to enjoy their job.

One way to help employees work harder and foster employee creativity is to reduce the number of hours they work each day. Working for longer than 8-10 hours a day makes employees dissatisfied with their jobs and they are less-committed to their work.
Another option employers have is to start requiring daily naps. Sleep is necessary to restore the body and the mind and a short nap in the afternoon can help employees that do not get the proper amount of rest each night.
Females are prone to experience insomnia more than males. This higher level of insomnia also has a direct impact on their job satisfaction and job performance. Employers can help these employees by removing stimulants like caffeine from the office. They can also incorporate a wellness program to encourage daily exercise and proper rest.
Lack of sleep impacts your motor skills and the Highway Patrol has found that drowsy drivers are just as dangerous as drunk drivers. Another study found that when an individual is kept awake for 35 hours, their ability to comprehend language is completely shut down.
Working your employees too hard also hurts employee creativity. If employees are forced to work without short breaks in a 10-hour shift, their creativity will plummet and many of them will completely exhaust their ability to perform their jobs effectively. Help your employees re-charge their tanks by taking short breaks every 90-180 minutes. This is a great way to focus on other things besides their job and it gives them the opportunity to rest their brain.
An individual that gets less than 4-5 hours of rest a night has cognitive impairment that is equal to being legally drunk. Their reaction time is slower, their judgment is impaired and they often have problems dealing with problem solving.
Companies that work employees too hard also see a 25% turnover ratio. Many of the employees quickly burn out because they are not getting the proper amount of rest. To combat burn-out, start closing the office doors no later than 7:00 p.m. This will help employees complete their work on-time and return home each night to receive a full night's rest. Shorter work hours force the deadlines to be tighter and this provides companies with a higher level of productivity because employees are not wasting valuable company time.
Lack of sleep also causes headaches and migraines, both of which cause employees to have impaired judgment and many of them use sick leave. To help headaches, many employees turn to caffeine. Water is actually the best source of medicine for a headache because the body drinks from the colon and it needs to have the cleanest fluid possible. Remove caffeine from your office or encourage employees to drink it in the morning, not the afternoon. Caffeine takes 8-12 hours to work its way out of your system, causing you to stay awake longer.
Open the blinds and let sunlight into the office. Sunlight helps to regulate the body and it can help you stay awake during the daytime hours. During the morning hours, always make sure the windows are open so employees can gain proper exposure to the sun. The sun helps the body produce melatonin, a hormone that helps the body regulate its sleep cycle. Encourage employees to go outside and each lunch or to take breaks outside, this can help to produce the proper amount of melatonin they need to get a good night's rest.
