How to fix a distracting environment so you can stay motivated

When you are trying to stay motivated and focused, distractions are never a good thing. So, how can you fix a distracting environment so that you are able to stay motivated? Well, the fixes are simple, but only if you are dedicated to creating a distraction free environment. The answer is simple, you remove the distractions:
Figure out what your distractions are. If you are not sure what your distractions are, you can't remove them. So, your first step in creating a distraction free environment so that you can stay motivated is to determine what your distractions are. You figure out your distractions by noting them on paper whenever a distraction occurs. So, keep a pad of paper and a sharp pencil or a pen. Each time you are distracted, write it down. Those are the distracting elements that need to be fixed.

Next, you will simply need to remove the distractions you can control. So, if your distraction is that you can't resist answering your telephone, then take your telephone off the hook, turn off the ringer, or at least silence the phone during the time you need to be free from distractions. This takes a great deal of determination. It is not easy to avoid distractions, especially if you do not particularly like the task at hand. But, in order to fix a distracting environment you must remove any and all distractions. If your particular brand of distraction is online chatting, and you have to be working on your computer, it will be hard to stay motivated to keep working if your friends are instant messaging you every few minutes. So, either disable chat while needing to be motivated, or never log on in the first place.
Next, eliminate as many of the uncontrolled by you distractions as you can. How do you do this? Well, first you need to determine what distractions are outside your control. These are distractions caused by people, accident, etc. Obviously you can't eliminate accident distractions. You can do things like make sure your oven is off so that you don't start a fire or burn your food. However, you can eliminate some of the uncontrolled distractions caused by people by informing people that you need a distraction free environment. Let those who tend to distract you know that in order to be successful with staying motivated you need them not to interrupt during your working hours, etc. So, put an away message on your instant messenger, put a busy message on your phone, put a "do not disturb" sign on your door, let your friends know when you need to focus so that they do not stop in, etc. If you do what you can to inform people of your need to stay motivated they are likely to respect your wishes, and leave you be during the time you have dedicated to work.
If you work from home, or even just do homework, etc. at home, and need to eliminate distractions in order to stay better motivated, it is best if you set up a time and space dedicated to that work. The environment, or space, you use should be only used for work so that when you are in that space you have the feeling that is your work. If you set aside a specific time, people will know when not to bother you, and you are more likely to be productive, and have a non-distracting environment, instead of a distracting one.
