Introduction

The majority of American's are unhappy with their weight and even more are unhappy with their health. The life expectancy of the average American has, to the surprise of experts, decreased in recent years. This brings to life the severity of the health problems that we have. Whether you are overweight, have poor eating habits, don't exercise as much as you should or have an unhealthy addiction, there are always options to get healthy.

Get motivated to get healthy

We all want to be healthy, that is the easy part. The hard thing is getting motivated to actually do what it takes to improve your health. What you need to know is that for every excuse you may have for why you have not done something about your health, there are many more strategies and ideas for finding the motivation to improve your health. Here are just a few examples:

  • Make a promise and remind yourself

Many times we have moments of strength where we commit to making a change to improve our health, but after a little time passes by, we forget the resolution behind those goals and slowly let what motivation we had mustered up fall by the wayside. What needs to happen is that you need to be honest with yourself and commit, make a promise, that you are going to work hard to achieve the goal you have set for yourself. Tape notes around your house, mark dates on your calendar, do whatever it takes to keep the fire of motivation alive even when you do not feel like it.

  • Strength in numbers

Being accountable for your actions can be one of the greatest motivators there is. So find ways to have your health goals be monitored by others. You can do this by scheduling regular workout sessions with a friend or by checking in with a family member at a set time every day. When you have the knowledge that by not sticking to your health goals you are not only letting yourself down, but you are letting down someone you care about, all of the sudden health conscious activities do not seem so optional.

  • Make it fun

It should not come as a surprise to you that people will choose to do what they enjoy over what they do not enjoy every time. The same is true with getting healthy. Nothing fizzles motivation faster than being forced to do something that you do not want to do. So, you need to be creative and think of ways to make whatever is not fun about getting healthy, more fun. For example, dieting may not be fun because you do not get to eat out with your friends as often. You can make dieting more fun by inviting your friends to go out to eat at a place that specializes in healthier foods or you can make a healthy meal for them. There is always a way to make the process more enjoyable, even if it is just changing your attitude about it.

  • Challenge what you think your capable of

It is far better to overshoot when it comes to making a goal than it is to make simple goals that you have no trouble obtaining. When a task is simple, the payoff is simple. But when achieving a goal is difficult, or even seemingly impossible, achieving that goal can provide motivation more sustainable than you could imagine. There is no shame in trying hard to accomplish a lofty goal and falling just short of it. So start thinking bigger than you had thought before, be a dreamer and fight not only to stay motivated but to prove to yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to.
