How to get smarter

Few people have made the conscious effort to be fine with just how smart they are and therefore rid themselves of the desire to be any smarter. In fact, we would label someone with this mentality as dumb. So if we all want to be smarter, what is keeping us from doing it? The logical explanation is that we do not know how. Aside from going back to school, a huge time, and financial commitment, what can be done to get smarter? Fortunately, there are plenty of things that you can do on any budget and with any schedule that can beef up your brainpower.

Multitask

Multitasking is something that we all have time to do, so why not throw getting smarter into the pile of things that we do during the day. You do not need a fancy handheld electronic device with mind-bending games on it to stimulate your brain during those few moments that you may have between thoughts. Instead, you can simply be conscious of things that you can do smarter. Think of your times tables while sitting in the dentist's chair or practice spelling a list of words that you may be trying to learn. Use your brain instead of a calculator to figure out your grocery item total. It literally takes a few extra minutes to think smarter.

Eat right

We all know that we should be taking care of our bodies, but what we may not realize is the effect that our physical health has on our mental health. Hopefully, it does not come as a surprise that drinking caffeinated drinks may help you from dozing off, but they do nothing for mental ability. The same goes with those power drinks. You can receive benefits from vitamins, minerals, and other supplemental products that have been proven to enhance the natural benefits of the body-brain relationship (i.e. Ginkgo biloba is said to enhance one's memory capability).

Look for smart information

There is only so much that you can do to make yourself smarter without taping into some outside sources of information. In order to get smarter you need to learn more. Feed your mind with impressive bits of information. Learn more about everyday occurrences. You may be surprised at just how much more there is to learn about what you thought was ordinary and uninteresting.

Think smart

Many times, a metal block stops us from getting smarter. Some people just resign themselves to thinking that they were not meant to be the one who has all the answers. But such thinking can easily be the reason why you are not getting smarter. In order to be smarter, you have to think smarter. Believe that you are capable of great intelligence and then make sure that you do all in your power to live up to that expectation.

Take a deep breath

One recent study found evidence that the daily practice of meditation thickened the parts of the brain's cerebral cortex responsible for decision-making, attention, and memory. You need to practice committing information to your long-term memory bank. Help your brain along by taking a few seconds to organize your thoughts.

Let's get visual

Learning how to be a smarter version of yourself may just be in your approach. Many people are visual learners and can quickly learn a task if they are able to watch it done first. If you know that you are a visual learner, look for opportunities to turn difficult tasks into more manageable ones by making visual cues for yourself. Studies have shown that the more senses you are able to stimulate, the better you will be able to remember the situation. Look for ways to incorporate as many senses into an experience as possible and you may be surprised at just how easily details will come back to your memory in the future.
