How to improve yourself

Everyone has something that they would like to change or improve about themselves. Sometimes finding methods for self improvement is difficult. It is much easier to find flaws and suggest improvements for others. Therefore, the first step in improving yourself is to take some time for introspection to determine which characteristics you are happy with and which characteristics you would like to change. Remember the point to making efforts in improving yourself is not to have a pity party and feel badly about your faults, but to positively look for ways to be better.

As you begin this process of self examination it is important to have a positive attitude. Determine what needs improvement and what does not. Start by identifying your assets then move on to the areas that are more like liabilities. Sometimes another person may be needed in this process. Ask a trusted confident, like a loved one, a therapist, or a religious leader. Sometimes we talk ourselves into thinking that our liabilities are really assets or vice versa. Having someone who knows you well give their input can be a valuable way of making sure that we truly are honest with ourselves.

Once you have identified what you want to change, look for information that will help you improve that specific area. You may have a relative who you admire because of their strength in an area where you find weakness or there may be a book that you think would be helpful to read. Professional help may be a good option if you are struggling to find the information that your need on your own. The path to self improvement is often very long; sometimes it may seem never ending. The important thing to remember is that by making an honest effort to improve, you are bound to have results, even if you do not see them at first.

Keep at it! You may see yourself making improvements in the areas that you are trying to work on or you may find yourself coming to many dead ends. It is important to keep trying. If one technique does work for you, try another, be persistent. When you do find something that helps you to improve an area in your life, practice that change. If, for example, you have a desire to be more patient, you will first read about the virtue of patience, figure out what situations you need to be more patient in and then put those things into practice. Change can be very uncomfortable, especially in cases like this when the changes we are trying to implement are contrary to how we have acted naturally in the past. In order to change you have to make the change you want your new reality. Make yourself into the person that you want to be.

Motivation to improve yourself can be hard to find. Be sure to believe in your ability to change. Remember the strengths that you have recognized in yourself and use those strengths to lift you up when you feel down on yourself. There will be times when improvement comes very slowly. But you must realize that the habits that you have developed and want to change have taken a lifetime to create, it is unrealistic to expect to change them in a short period of time. Another suggestion is that sometimes the best way to help yourself is to look outside of yourself and be generous and show charity to others. Often times in forgetting about our own problems and helping others, we see strengths in ourselves that we did not know were there. This boost of positive self esteem can serve as much needed motivation to conquer the other self improvement items that may still remain.
