1. Identify your strengths. In order to live up to your potential, you need to be able to identify your strengths- your talents or things that make you a unique and worthwhile person. You have the power to change your habits. You can acquire new skills and fully develop and use the skills you have. Once you've identified the strengths you do have, gaining new ones becomes that much easier.

2. Focus on your potential. Now that you've identified your strengths, you're ready to make a complete assessment of your potential. Make a list of all your strengths. Be honest with yourself. What are you good at? How can you improve those things? Now make another list of the things you'd like to do, even if you can't do them well. Go through this list and ask yourself why you haven't been able to/ haven't chosen to do those things yet. Identify what is holding you back. Go back through your 2 lists and focus on what you CAN do- focus on your POTENTIAL, not on what you've haven't been able to do or can't do.
3. Set goals. Now that you know what you CAN do and what you WANT to be able to do, it's time to set some goals. Just remember to be realistic. If you set goals that are so high you can't possibly reach them, you're simple setting yourself up for failure, which will make you frustrated and unhappy. The key here is to make an honest assessment of your potential.
4. Don't compare yourself to others. Don't compare your progress to others. This will only end up making you unhappy. Remember that you are an individual unlike any other. You have different strengths and different weaknesses than anyone else. You have a very different potential than anyone else. So comparing yourself does no good to you or to other people.
5. Break your bad habits. One thing that can get in the way of your potential is your bad habits. Hopefully, you were able to identify these bad habits when you made a list of the things that keep you from achieving your potential. But if you didn't, make another list of all your bad habits. Identify which of those bad habits get in the way of you achieving your full potential. Try to eliminate them
6. Employ positive thinking. One of the worst ways to reach your goals and achieve your potential is to ruin yourself with negative thinking. Instead, think positive. Encourage yourself by putting uplifting notes on the mirror or in your day planner. Tell yourself that you can do it and you can.
7. Ask for advice. When you're working on living up to your potential, it is sometimes helpful to ask friends or family for advice. Show them your list of goals, bad habits, and desired potential traits. Ask them how you've been doing. Have you improved? Have you gotten worse? Have you stayed the same? Ask your friend or family member what you could do to improve. S/he may have suggestions that are very helpful that you hadn't thought of yet.
Following these suggestions will not guarantee that you will be able to live up to your potential. But it will certainly help. So give it a try! You don't really have anything to lose.
