How to make lasting changes that help you to improve? As you sit down and think about the changes you want to make in your life, it is hard to know how you are going to make those changes last. The reason is, that we are all creatures of habit. Therefore, if we are used to doing specific steps, processes, or activities in our life, then it is going to be hard to change those habits.

It is easy for some at first to go from one habit to another healthier habit. Sometimes that person can stay motivated enough to continue with that change. However, often times, we will find that we will instinctively revert back to the old behavior because it felt more comfortable. See it is easier to be motivated at first for some of us. However, in the long run we lose that motivation.

There are others of us, which have a very hard time becoming motivated at first. Though, when we get ourselves going, we end up being able to stick it out and change the habit.

Whichever one of these types of people you are, it is ok. There is nothing wrong with feeling this way. The thing about it is, you will need to recognize what type of person you are, and then get the motivation going for the times that you know you will back out of the positive change in your life.

When you know where you will need help making your changes last, you will be able to work within yourself to improve. Here are some steps that you can take to help to make your changes last.

  1. Know why you want to change. Do not simply say, "I want to quit smoking" Give yourself a reason and some logic to help back you up. The reason this is important, is that logically we can convince ourselves to do what is best for us, if we know why it is best. Mind over matter, however if we do not know why it matters, then you will not know why you are going to make the change happen.
  2. When you know why you want to change, it will be important to set yourself some goals. The overall goal will be the main thing you want to change. This can be just about anything. The main thing to do with your main goal, is to make sure it is feasible, and that you give yourself enough time to really make the change happen.
  3. Then you will want to take the main goal, and split it up into several small goals, or steps that will help you reach that larger goal. This is how this would work with a goal like losing 30 pounds.
    • Start by finding an exercise program that works for your physical needs.

    • Look for a type of diet that you can handle, that will help you to lose weight.

    • Get a support group that can help you to feel motivated to lose weight. Measure your size and weight weekly. Each time you lose 5 or 10 lbs, reward yourself.

    • When you have reached your final goal, reward yourself. Also from the beginning have a reminder posted of what that overall reward will be.
  4. When you have started and reached the changes you want to happen in your life, remember to reward yourself. Being motivated and staying motivated will help you to be consistent in your choices for change.

This is how to make lasting changes that help you to improve. However you set up your plan for improvement and change will be up to you. The key is to have faith in yourself and your decisions.
