The Internet is a great tool that many of us would be lost without. It provides an opportunity to connect with friends, communicate, learn new things, be entertained, and allows you to complete a number of tasks, such as paying bills.

But if you're trying to get homework done, or you have assignments at work you need to finish, the Internet can be a distraction. The temptation to check emails, your Facebook page, your bank statement, the news, or any and everything in between can often be too much, and you find yourself being distracted by the Internet so much that you can't finish your work.

Whether you're trying to finish a project at work, studying for a test, or have things you need to get done around the house, the following are some tips on how to not get distracted by the Internet:

Consider the ramifications.
If you are distracted by the Internet at work so much that it is interfering with your ability to get your work done, it's a good idea to step back and consider the consequences of allowing yourself to be distracted. Not only does it keep you from getting your work done, but many companies also monitor Internet use and emails. So if you are spending all day surfing the web when you should be working, your employer will notice this soon and it could cost you your job. Or, if you are having people over for dinner, think how embarrassed you'll be if your company arrives and dinner isn't ready because you were too distracted by the Internet. Keeping these things in mind is a good way to avoid getting distracted by the Internet.

Turn off the computer.
People get distracted by things that are readily available. If you have things to get done around the house or need to study or do homework but are distracted by the computer, just turn it off. When something is readily available, it makes it easier to be distracted by it. But if you turn it off and then think of the time it takes to turn it back on and reboot the computer, you'll be less likely to drop everything and turn on the computer.

Allow yourself a time to use the Internet.
You'll be less likely to be distracted by the Internet if you give yourself permission to get online. So, tell yourself you can get online on your lunch break. Or, after you study for an hour or have dinner in the oven, you can get on the Internet to do whatever you want. Give yourself a time limit, such as 20 minutes, and then tell yourself you have to get back to work or your other tasks. Knowing that you have time coming up that you can get on the Internet then will help you stay focused on your tasks.

Block tempting sites.
If you're distracted by sites like Twitter or Facebook that you could spend hours at a time on, block them from your computer when you have something to do. Knowing that you'll have to go through the trouble of unblocking them will help you stay on task.

The Internet is a wonderful thing that has many advantages. But if you're trying to get things done, it can be distracting. These are a few tips to keep from getting distracted by the Internet.
