How to stay motivated despite the odds

Times are tough right now. People are feeling the pinch left and right. It becomes easy to doubt yourself and your abilities when seemingly so few people in this world are experiencing success. Staying motivated despite the odds is perhaps the biggest mental challenge that the majority of us face. There are many deterrents that stand in our way and unfortunately more goals are left by the wayside then are carried through to completion. Fortunately there are many different ways to stay motivated despite the odds. Here are just a few suggestions to keep in mind:

The grass is not always greener
Many times as we are struggling to find the motivation to continue moving forward with our goals, we think of how easy other people must have it. Thoughts that the grass is greener on the other side can be very tempting. But what such thoughts really end up being are excuses. We use the fact that others must have it easier than us because we cannot accept responsibility for our own shortcomings. In reality, we are all in the same boat. We all have goals that we have hard times motivating ourselves to reach. So stop blaming others for your motivational short comings. You have a goal to reach, so get to it!
Failure is not an option
You have probably been in the situation where you have a goal in mind and are thinking about how you will make that goal a reality when the voice of doubt enters your mind. Before you know it, the time that you thought you were taking to plan out how you will stay motivated to get something done has turned into a session where you already started thinking about how you might fail. Stop this destructive thought pattern before it even starts. Stay motivated from day one by deciding that failure is not an option.
Have a cause
Many times we allow the things of life to derail our motivation. While changes in life are unavoidable and the unexpected is bound to happen, if you have a cause that you are fighting for or an inspirational backing to your goals you can significantly increase your chances of staying motivated despite the odds. Your inspiration or cause for staying motivated might be your children, a close friend or the fact that you want to prove to yourself that you are capable of accomplishing what you set your mind to. Many of us will work harder to another person than we will work for ourselves. So involve others in your goals.
Stay focused
You can do everything right when it comes to preparing for the odds that you will face as you try hard to stay motivated to accomplish something, but there will be some times when it is hard to remember why you were motivated in the first place, and just how your motivation is holding up. You need to find a way to stay focused on the things that keep you motivated. Write yourself a note that you can read as soon as you wake up, keep a picture of your kids close to your bedside to remind yourself who you are working so hard for. Have friends call and check in on you to ask you how you are doing with your goals and if you need extra encouragement. If you like lists, make yourself a list of things that you can do that day to stay motivated and to make progress. Do whatever works for you and you will find that you can stay motivated despite the odds.
