Finding the desire to change is the first and most important step in breaking any habit and is absolutely essential with something as addictive as alcohol. The statistics about alcohol and all of the problems that accompany it are very real, but the people behind the problems are real as well and it's the people that need to make the changes. If you even have to ask yourself if you have a drinking problem, that's probably a good sign that there are some changes that need to be made with you and your relationship with alcohol. - Some people are able to just stop drinking when they decide that it is a real problem and then they never have a problem with it again after that. But there are also many cases where people have formed a habit or addiction to alcohol that will make them unable to stop without some help. If you have tried and have found that things just aren't working for you, then the next step may be to look for help from other people or from another source. Sometimes people with a drinking problem simply need someone else to help them get started and to help them along the way.
- When you are motivated to do something, one of the best things you can do to help realize that goal is to write down all of the reasons you want to accomplish it. If there is a time when you are feeling particularly motivated to quit drinking, then write down some of your thoughts and the reasons why you want to quit. This will make it easier to regain or to keep focus when you have a difficult time with your goal.
- You can also make the process a financial game. Sometime people are motivated to quit drinking when they think of the financial burden that it causes them. Alcohol can quickly become expensive. When you are in the process of quitting drinking, you can save up all of the money that you would have spent on alcohol if you were still willing to do it. Put this money in a jar or a place where it will be safe. You can even set up bank account, go to the bank, and deposit the money you would have spent on alcohol rather than to the store to buy some.
