How to think positively, despite difficult circumstances

One of the best qualities any person can develop is the ability to think positively despite difficult circumstances. It has been said that there are no situations so bad that complaining about them won't make them worse! Here are some ideas on how to think positively despite difficult circumstances.

1. Make a habit of looking for the good.

People who make a habit of looking for the good in any situation will find it easier to think positively despite difficult circumstances. The more a person tries to find something good in every situation, the easier it is and the more they do it. Whether it is a tough assignment at work, a problem with one's son or daughter, or a budget that is not quite covering needs there is always something positive. If nothing else, dealing with difficulties helps people have empathy for others who find themselves in similar circumstances.

2. Find people who also think positively.

People's attitudes rub off on the people around them. Being around a negative person causes us to start thinking negatively and look at all of the obstacles, problems, and difficulties in any situation. Whereas being around someone who is upbeat, positive, and happy despite difficulties helps us to feel the same. To think positively despite difficult circumstances, a person should surround himself or herself with other people who think positively and can see something good in every situation.

3. Find good activities to keep busy.

Sometimes having too much time to sit around and stew about all of life's problems makes life worse. Keeping busy can do a lot towards helping people avoid negative thinking. Find good activities that help build positive thinking. Being involved in hobbies like painting, sculpting, writing, exercising, reading, and a variety of other activities helps a person build positive memories and keep their minds active. Any type of activity that is stress relieving and enjoyable to a person will help them think positively despite difficult circumstances.

4. Serve others.

Doing something nice for someone else is probably the fastest way to shake off any negative thinking. Helping someone else makes people realize how much they have to be grateful for. It can really stimulate some positive thinking. Serving other can be easy. Going to a local homeless shelter or women's shelter and offering service is easy. Volunteering at a youth facility, school, boys and girls club, or other program is very rewarding. Any of these activities will really help people be positive.

5. Talk it through

For some people it really helps to talk their problems through with a good friend. Sometimes getting all of the issues out in the open and talking through them once will help them think more positively. This is not a suggestion to talk endless and dwell endlessly on a problematic situation, but rather to talk about concerns and then let them go. It can also be good to get someone else's point of view. When people are faced with a really hard issue, they tend to see it from only one angle: their angle. It can really help to hear how someone else sees the problem, although it can be hard to find good honest criticism instead of someone who will just tell you what you want to hear. So find someone to trust, and talk it out.

Thinking positively despite difficult circumstances is really a great quality. People can work on their ability to be positive by making it a habit to look for the good in any circumstance, being around other people who think positively, keeping busy, serving others, and talking through their problems.
