How to uncover your true goals so you can get what you want in life

Goals are an essential part of motivation and therefore the success of a person's life. Learn here how to uncover your true goals, so that you can get what you want in life.

The first way to uncover your true goals is to set goals. Let's go over how to set goals, so that you can find out what your true goals really are. Goal setting involves setting specific, measurable and time targeted objectives. It's an effective tool for making progress by ensuring that you are clearly aware of what is expected from you. Setting goals allows your to specify and then work towards your own objectives. The most effective goals should be tangible, specific, realistic and have a time target for completion. You must have a realistic plan to achieve your intended goal. Setting unrealistic goals can be very harmful, especially for young people, or those with low self-esteem, because missing a goal can lower one's self-esteem even further.

Now there are two types of goals: long term and short term. A long term goal is an achievement set to be reached over a long period of time. This can be any length of time, but these type of goals usually tend to be measured in years. Setting a long term goal is usually divided up by a series of short term goals to eventually reach the long term goal. A short term goal is something that you desire to accomplish in a short period of time. That is, a short term goal may be achieved in a day, week, month, or year. The time frame for a short term goal is related to its context in the overall timeline that it's being applied to. For example, a short term goal for a month long project may be measured in days, whereas a short term goal for someone's life might be measured by months or years. Both of these types of goals are important tools in measuring success. Once you've set these goals (and actually work towards them) you'll find that your success will greatly improve.

So how do you know what your true goals are? Well, the first way is to attempt setting goals (as mentioned above) and then watching to see the results of those goals. Are you able to achieve the goals that you've set? Are the goals that you've set really what you're trying to get out of life? If you're finding that all the goals you've been setting are not being accomplished, you may want to reorganize your goal priorities.

Think about the things that are important to you. Try to choose just one goal that is the most important above all other goals. Which goals can you eliminate? Once you've been able to narrow down your goals to one or two that are the most important, you'll have a better idea of your true goals.

You may also have different types of true goals. For example, you may have true goals that are related to your career. What do you most want out of your career? What can you do to accomplish it? What about your family? What types of familial goals do you have? Are you trying to improve or mend a relationship? What about in your personal life? Do you have any hobbies or bad habits you're desperate to change? Make a list of what types of goals matters most to you. Then eliminate all but the most important five goals. Then determine whether these goals are long term or short term goals. You'll find that in making true goals, you're able to get what you want out of life.
