Lack of sleep, killer of motivation

peaceful30349841.jpgOne of the biggest killer of motivation is being tired. A lack of sleep is one of the worst things you can do for yourself if you want to get and stay motivated.

Let's look at some examples of when lack of sleep acts as the killer of motivation:

1. Motivation to work out. At some point in almost everyone's life they need a little motivation to get out the door for a jog, go to the gym, or do a workout in their home. When your alarm rings at 6 am to signify it is time to get up to work out, and you did not get to bed until after 1, do you think you are going to get up and go workout? Or do you think your motivation is going to go out the window?
2. Motivation to be patient. Many parents can identify with the goal to be more patient, whether it is with your kids, or with your work, or with your neighbors, etc. When people are lacking sleep, they are often cranky. So, when the neighbor comes over for the millionth time to "borrow" a cup of flour, which they never return, your patience runs out.
3. Motivation to work. A lot of people need motivation to work harder, to push their comfort bubble out further, to network more, etc. When you are lacking sleep, you are not feeling your best, and stepping outside your comfort zone is unlikely to happen.

The fact is that when you are lacking sleep motivation is one of the first things to go. Whether you are dieting, and you are too tired to fix a meal, so you grab a greasy cheeseburger, or you simply decide to skip the thing you were motivated to do so you can catch a nap. To be mentally prepared for life, your mind needs to have rest. When you are struggling with motivation, sleep is important. It gives you the energy to bolster yourself up and recommit each time you are tempted to give up.

Think back to your own life and ask yourself if there was ever a time when lack of sleep lead to you not doing something you had been motivated to do, or where struggling to accomplish. When motivation is on the line, getting your eight hours is as important as positive thinking and support. So, no matter what it is you are trying to stay motivated to do, if you are serious about it, then commit yourself to a decent bed time.

In addition to helping you stay motivated, proper sleep makes life easier. You have a clearer mind, making goals that are about your mind, work, improvement, etc. easier to accomplish. Enough sleep helps your body fight stress easier, so there is less chance you will get sick, and thus you will be able to stick to goals about working out, eating right, etc. Getting enough sleep is also healthy for your body. You will feel better, metabolize better, etc. So, it helps your weight, your health, and your attitude. Get enough sleep so that your motivation can live!
