Learning to be a more rounded individual and using motivation to get there

Have you ever been to a magic show, and the magician only knows one trick? Sure, it may be a good trick, but you would like to see other tricks as well. Maybe you've attended the concert of a favorite singer who is a "one hit wonder". The crowd cheers for that one song and is relatively quiet on all the others. In our lives, we all have things that we do and are that make us feel important. We may be good at our profession or derive pleasure from a hobby. We may be noticed by others because of the car that we drive or because of the beauty of our front yard. However, as we journey through life, it is not good to put all our eggs into a single basket. We need to diversify our life so that we can be a more rounded individual, and encourage our family to do the same.

In becoming a more rounded individual, you don't need to get good at everything. It is only required that you improve. When you see an area of your life that needs improvement, then begin to do something about it immediately, and motivate yourself to do so. Let's say for instance that you would like to improve your level of fitness, a very common desire. Don't set an unrealistic goal of running the Boston marathon. Start with something small. Maybe you could go for a 20 to 30 minute jog or walk three times a week. The main thing to remember is to choose a goal that is attainable. Doing something that is too hard will make you discouraged when you can't keep up with the unrealistic demand that you have made on yourself. You don't need to excel in every endeavor in order to get the benefit from it.

Working too much can certainly make Jack a dull boy, but on the other hand, not working enough can also make you feel unfulfilled. Your professional life and education should be one of your top priorities in life. Having the ability to excel in your profession, and to be an educated person is definitely something priceless. The skills that you will gain from a good education will carry over into every other aspect of your life.

When you know what you want to do in your life to make yourself a more rounded person, use motivational techniques to help get you there. Ask yourself in what area of your life you are lacking. Most people already know the answer to this question. There is purpose in everything. Why do you want to learn to sing? Write down all the reasons why you want to do it. Use someone you admire as a mentor to help inspire you to continue. Read their biography or listen to their music. Do the things in your life that they did in theirs. Write a story about yourself succeeding in your new chosen endeavors, and believe that these things can happen to you too.

Stick with something long enough to see results. Maybe you remember learning to play a musical instrument as a child. You probably remember that it was not easy, and that your mom constantly nagged you to practice. But then came the day when playing the instrument became more effortless, and began to be fun. If you learned this principle as a child, then you can use that same principle in everything you do, whether it be in your physical fitness, your spirituality, your education, your job, your hobbies or your family life. Life is like fishing, when you stick with something long enough, and do enough of the right things, you will see results.
