Unhealthy relationships can be draining, time consuming, and downright bad for your health. If you are have a relationship with someone that doesn't make you feel good, or who encourages you to do unhealthy or illegal things, it is a toxic relationship, a negative influence on your life and you should remove yourself from it. If someone makes you feel bad about yourself on a regular basis, they are a negative influence and you shouldn't have to deal with them. Negative influences can come from anyone around us, but if it comes from the same person all the time, you are in an unhealthy relationship with them. It's time to move on and move up. Here are some steps to help you remove negative influences from your life:

Step #1: End it.

End the negative relationship and don't look back. If they won't leave you alone, change your email and phone number. Don't allow them to contact you while you are vulnerable. If you do allow yourself contact, their influence will remain. A toxic relationship can be any sort of relationship, but you should remove its influence from your life.

Step #2: Make new friends.

The best way to fill the void left by the person who was negatively impacting you is to fill it with positive people. Make new friends and hang out with people who allow you to have good feelings. Seek out people who empower you, make you feel energetic, and who are positive. If you don't fill the void, it will be filled for you, and more than likely it will be with another toxic relationship. That's how the universe works.

Step #3: Find new hobbies.

Find new things to fill your time so you don't drift back to a negative relationship. All the time you spent with your toxic influence has to be filled with something. Take a class at the local college, join a fitness club, and find people who have similar interests. Volunteer at a local shelter, train for a marathon, or take up art. Fill that time up with things that make you feel good.

Step #4: Change your work environment.

If the negative influence is at your work place, it is time to find a new job or get transferred. Working with a negative person can suck the life out of you and make you dread going to work in the morning. It really will be better for your life if you quit and find something new. You don't have to quit, but get the heck out of there in any way possible so you aren't affected by a negative work environment anymore.

Step #5: Move.

Toxic relationships are often with a neighbor or someone who lives close to you, unfortunately. If this is the case, you may want to seriously consider moving. A negative influence in your neighborhood doesn't just affect you, but affects your entire family. Look for a new address in a new neighborhood, or if you are really serious about removing a negative influence, consider a new city.

Step #6: Be positive.

Switch gears and start focusing on positive things. We attract negative influences into our lives by focusing on negative things. Think positive. Practice principles of positive thinking. You aspirations and hopes are a great place to start. Hope is always a positive mind set. You cannot have hope and be negative too.

Step #7: Meditate and relax.

Take a few minutes every day to meditate and relax. Meditation helps you focus on positive feelings and shut out negative influences. Relaxation is a good way to restore your balance and your sense of self.
