Not letting road bumps kill your motivation

Life has often been referred to as a great roller coaster. There are times when you are up and times when you are down. The same is true when it comes to achieving goals. Sometimes the motivation is there and you are determined to accomplish what you have set your mind to. And other times, there are road bumps, obstacles that get in the way of that motivation. Not letting road bumps kill your motivation is a type of test that we all must face. This test determines just how committed we were to our goal in the first place.

The key to not letting road bumps kill your motivation is to keep your focus on achieving your goal. Here are some suggestions that can help you to overcome mental and physical obstacles that might otherwise cause your motivation to fizzle:

  1. Think positive. Your motivation is a state of mind that can only be changed when you let outside influences change the way that you think about your goals. Many times people begin with a great deal of motivation, they are determined to get something done. But no one can fully prepare for what the future can hold and the unexpected id bound to happen. The one thing that you can prepare for is how you will react to life's road bumps. By committing to think positively, even the most trying of circumstances can be easier to cope with. When you have a plan for coping with the unexpected, it doesn't deviate you as far away from your goals and it becomes easier to find your motivation again.
  2. Keep your cool. As you try to remain positive, hopefully you will notice another change that occurs in your temperament and that is the ability that you can have to be a calmer individual. When we let out emotions get the best of us, it is easier to lose sight of where our priorities are. Having a clear and open mind will allow you to take a step back from life's road bumps and see the bigger picture. When you are able to see the bigger picture, it becomes easier to realize that set-backs are temporary and that it would be much more beneficial in the long term to regain the motivation to see your goals through to the end. Always be ready to receive new ideas. Focus and find time to meditate.
  3. Persist. There is a solution to every problem. There is no goal too lofty that it is not worth working towards. Motivation is something that everyone is capable of. Remember these truths and use them as encouragement when encouragement is needed. There is always another possibility to explore so be persistent in getting over the hurdles you will face.
  4. It never hurts to ask for help. There are times when alone we simply cannot have the insight or the calm needed to not let life's road bumps kill our motivation. In times such as this it is good to remember that there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for help. Seek the advice of someone that you trust. Let them know what your goals are and why you are having trouble staying motivated. Those that you trust and who care about you often times have the ability to provide valuable insight that you may not have previously considered. Involving others can also be a great form of motivation itself. When we hold ourselves accountable to those whose opinions we value (instead of just ourselves) the desire to not let others be disappointed in our lack luster efforts can be a strong source of motivation.
