The Social Butterfly in You

If you are not the out-going sort, making new friends can cause you a lot of stress and anxiety. It may be so bad that you lose all motivation to get out there and do it. Overcoming your fears of meeting new people takes a lot of courage, but it also takes a significant amount of willpower. Get yourself on track to make new friends by getting your motivation rolling. Here are a few simple ideas to help you get there.

Get out and get going!
Get out and get going. Get motivated to make new friends by being out and among people. You won't get motivated to meet new people by sitting on your butt in front of the television or by burying your nose in a book. Get out around people. The more often you go out, the more comfortable you'll be around strangers the more easily you'll fall into conversation with them. You can't motivate yourself to meet new people if you never give yourself the opportunity to do so. Get out and get going. The more you do, the more motivated you'll be. Motivation is willpower, and willpower doesn't work unless you fuel it. Act! Get out and get going!
Be positive!
When you strike out to make new friends, it is much easier to stay motivated in the face of perceived rejection when you have a good attitude. Be positive! Reality can bite, but it also can be fun. It all depends on how you look at it. There are a lot of mean people out there, but if you keep a good attitude and face on things, you'll find others that are just like you. You'll find those who are searching for new friends if you keep yourself motivated by being positive. The downers don't make friends easily. You want to have a good experience, a successful experience so you can stay motivated to go out there and do it again. Be upbeat, friendly, and positive and you'll find people gravitating toward you so you hardly have to do any work. Be positive!
Play the memory game!
Actually having a successful experience in making a new friend is the best motivating incident you can have to keep you going. The key to making your experience successful is to listen and remember. The more you are interested in another person, and the more you remember about them, the more they will want to be your friend. Improve your memory any way you can so you can have a successful experience. Find memory hooks that will remind you of important information (their name, their drink, their dreams). Stay motivated to make new friends by having successful experiences. Play the memory game!
Practice makes perfect!
Taking the first step in making a new friend is the hardest. Actually talking to people can be embarrassing, difficult, and de-motivating. You can stay motivated to talk to people and make new friends by practicing. Practice introducing yourself in front of a mirror, with a trusted friend, or with people that you don't really care if you mess up around. The more you practice the more comfortable you will be. The more comfortable you are, the more motivate you will be to go out and do it for real. Realize that you will probably embarrass yourself from time to time, but making yourself vulnerable is how you make true friends. Don't let an embarrassing moment stop your motivation ball from rolling. Use your embarrassing moment to practice and stay motivated to make and keep friends. Practice makes perfect!
