The steps to success always include motivation
How many people do you know that have been successful by accident? How many basketball scholarships were handed out to players who accidently got good at their sport? How many engineers got their degree in engineering without working really hard for it? Being successful is a way of life. It is a habit acquired by those who would not settle for something less than what they wanted.
The first question you may ask yourself is why you want to be successful. What is the purpose behind it? When achieving a goal has no real lasting value to you, then it will be hard to stick with. But when you find something that moves you to act, then you have something real that will motivate you during the difficult times.

As children, we often imagine what we will be when we grow up. We go from one occupation to another, and very seldom stick to anything for very long. Maybe a child wants to be a doctor because she heard that they make a lot of money. Earning a good living is a good thing, and a child knows this. But as the child grows, she realizes that money is not enough of a reason to become a doctor. Someone becomes a doctor because they enjoy solving or preventing people's health problems. This is a pursuit that has a deep and meaningful purpose. Becoming a doctor requires a lot of time, money and hard work. Even after the years of college and medical school, there is still an internship to go through before a doctor can set up her own practice. There is no way anyone can become a doctor without finding deep purpose in it.
In order to be motivated to do something, you need a purpose. Fear can motivate us to go to work everyday so that we can get our paycheck and make our payments, but desire is a greater motivator than fear. Finding our true desires it not always an easy process. We have to know ourselves a little bit, and know what we are good at. We enjoy doing things were we have had success in the past, and we hope to achieve greater success in the future. We can also use our imagination to pretend having success in different things. After imagining the success of each endeavor, some things will make us happier and more fulfilled than others. These are probably the ones that we should go for. If you imagine becoming a school teacher and it makes you happy seeing children learn and helping others, and you have had some success at this in the past, then you may want to seriously consider this as your path.
After deciding on a goal with a deep, meaningful, emotionally charged purpose, and constantly keeping a future vision of success in your mind, then you will have the motivation necessary to achieve success. What you need to do next is to identify the steps necessary to achieve your goal. You then need to obtain the education that will get you there, which is an ongoing process. You need to work steadily toward your goal. When setbacks and disappointments occur, you need to remember to think often about the underlying purpose of the work that you are doing. You also need to visualize your future success, and let your mind dwell on your past successes as well. Don't get discouraged by temporary setbacks, but plow through them.
The purpose of your goal is the fuel that will propel you into success.
