Tips for getting out of a slump
There's nothing worse than finding oneself stranded in the doldrums of the `blahs'. Those days, weeks, or months (hopefully not years!) of being in a slump are the worst. And it can be really hard to find a way to perk up and find some motivation for being optimistic. Check out this dynamite list for getting fired up again and getting out of a slump.
1. Exercise
It is a proven fact that exercise helps fight against depression. So hop up off the sagging couch and go swimming, biking, rollerblading, walking, hiking, jogging, ice skating, running, or something else, just get that heart pumping!

2. Reading
Getting involved in a really awesome book can really shake off a slump. We're not talking about some lame textbook either. Find a book that really sucks the readers in. Maybe that's a murder mystery or a sci-fi thriller. Check out some of the top ten lists for books, find one that's really up there and start reading.
3. Learning
Nothing broadens the horizon more than learning something new. Get into a new hobby. Raise your sights a little and learn about the constellations. Delve into the great deep and learn about the ocean or dig even deeper and learn about the earth's corer. Study geography; there are thousands of amazing places on the planet. Borrow a book from the library on some historical topic. Learn about ancient civilizations and their cultures. Just find something interesting and learn everything there is to know about it.
4. Meditate
Mediation can be a great help for getting out of a slump. Find a quiet place to sit and ponder about life, oneself, higher powers, and everything else. Try yoga or other forms of meditation. Read up on ways to meditate. Find some music or clothes or a location that helps in the meditation process.
5. Talk
Bend the ear of a really good friend. Call someone up and ask them to go out to lunch. Take the chance to just chat it up. Say everything or anything; don't filter a single thought. Just start talking. Try listening too for that matter. See what someone else is thinking, feeling, and doing with their life.
6. Serve
Find someone else who's having a major slump and do something for him or her. Helping someone else out of a slump helps you out too. Make cookies and take them to the neighbors next door. You've always wanted to get to know them anyway right? Volunteer at the local youth organization or at a near by after-school program. Kids are hilarious; they'll help cheer anyone up. Go to the homeless shelter and help serve dinner or ask what other assistance is needed. This will really make you grateful for what you have. Visit a nursing home. Old people have a lifetime of stories and they'll share them with whoever will listen.
7. Food
Find something that looks absolutely delicious and then tempt your taste buds. People get all worked up about associating foods with moods; throw it out the door for once and just cook something great. Don't just scarf it down though. Take time to make it perfect, and then set the table. Find the best dishes or china in the house. Put out a placemat. Light some candles. Say grace. Then carefully put the first bite on the fork or spoon. Look at it and admire the colors and texture. Then breathe in deeply and smell the food. Savor that moment. Finally, take that bite - but don't gulp it down. Experience the flavor of the food. Try to pick out every spice or ingredient in the dish. And then swallow. Repeat this during the whole meal and see if that doesn't help with a slump. For an even better experience, find someone to try this with.
8. Laugh
Nothing picks a person out of a slump faster than a really good laugh. Find a standup comedian show to go and see or to watch on TV. Call up a friend and have a good laugh. Have a tickle fight or do something really silly. Try touching belly buttons with a friend and keeping a straight face. Make faces at yourself in the mirror. Take a silly picture and email it to a friend. Read some funny jokes. Whatever it takes, just have a good laugh to get out of a slump.
9. Buy something nice
A wise grandmother once said, "If all else fails, get dressed up and buy your self something nice." Get dressed up like you are going on the hottest date of your life. Get your hair done, paint your toenails, shave your face, whatever it is that really makes you look stunning, do it. Put on the best smelling perfume or cologne that you own, put on your favorite clothes, and head out on the town. Find something absolutely wonderful that you've been drooling over for months and then buy it. You're worth it, right? (You might want to reserve this as a last ditch effort for getting out of a slump, or it could really make your bank account slump!)
All in all, being in a slump isn't a bad thing. It happens to the best of us. What we do with a slump is what really matters. So take these tips to heart for getting out of a slump.
