Using leadership skills to motivate employees

coworkersaroungacomputer22990951.jpgOne problem companies commonly run into is employee motivation. Most people come into a job with enthusiasm and they are ready to work hard, however over time this enthusiasm tends to fade. For some people, this happens through their personal attitude. For other people, it happens because the company lacks the leadership skills necessary to keep employees motivated.

Leadership refers to not only learning how to keep your employees motivated, but how to make their jobs easier. Take a look at the equipment at your facility, does it all work properly? How can you make your employees jobs easier? What is communication like between employees and departments? What can you do to improve communication?

Having an organized workplace is one of the best ways to motivate employees. If people are coming into an environment that is chaotic, it can become frustrating to them because they will be unable to properly perform their job duties. Look for ways to make the office organized so everyone knows what is expected of them and how to do their job to the best of their abilities.

Create an office environment that is built upon positive re-enforcement. Don't criticize your employees for everything they do, instead let them know how much you appreciate their hard work. If they need to do things differently, tell them politely. Bring your employees into your office each month and talk to them about their job. Find out if they are satisfied with their job or what needs to change in order for them to become satisfied.

A great way to keep your employees motivated is to spend time breaking down what is causing people to become frustrated. Perhaps you have one employee that just cant seem to follow the rules or maybe you have employees that are unwilling to speak up when you give them the opportunity. To help communication in the office, try a suggestion box. Let people know you are open to listening to anything they need to talk about that is work-related. During staff meeting, tell each employee what their role is during the meeting. A lot of businesses have problems with employees that disengage during meetings. By giving everyone a different role and responsibility, they will be less likely to fall asleep during staff meeting and you will get some good input that will improve your business.

Remove conflict from the office. If you have 2 employees that just can't seem to get along, tell them they need to work it out or they are both gone. Since they are adults, they need to learn to get over childish behavior that affects everyone else and work with a variety of personality types.

A good leader not only tells their employees what is expected of them, they also set expectations on themselves as well. If you want your employees to be in the office by 8:00 a.m., you need to be there at 7:45. Always hold yourself to a higher standard so you can set a good example for your employees. People will follow a leader that believes in the rules and guidelines they have established.

Make time to laugh at work. Although it is a professional environment, laughter can help to break down tension and stress. Instead of always riding your employees on deadlines, spend a few minutes talking to them and keep the conversation lighthearted. When employees enjoy the office environment they work in, they will become motivated to work harder for the company.

Look for ways to reward employees. You don't always need to reward them at Christmas, simply giving them recognition with time off at the end of the week is a great way to reward them.
