It's fair to say that achieving just about anything in life you have to have motivation, determination, and a good work ethic. Sometimes however, finding the motivation to make change happen in your life can be difficult. That's why it's important to understand why goals are an important part of motivation. Setting goals is sometimes considered to be the backbone of motivation. Without a goal to work towards, your motivation and desire to finish something is practically non-existent.

Goal Setting
Goals are much like road maps; they help you get from point A to point B. They provide the direction you need in your life and help nurture your motivation. When it comes to setting goals you need to think about the future. How do you define success? What drives you? Here are some suggestions on setting goals for yourself:

When it comes to goal setting, there are some things you can do to make sure that you are successful in your efforts.

  1. Be specific. If you're trying to motivate yourself to do something then try and be as specific as possible. Setting a general goal for something like losing weight can get pretty monotonous. In order to keep working towards to the end result you must know how much weight you want to lose, and maybe even give yourself a deadline to lose it by.

  2. Plan your goal. Once you've decided on what your goals are, you need to be plan out a timeline for achieving it. A time limit will help define a timetable of action to help you meet your goal. Knowing what you want to achieve and having a plan to achieve it will help you get through each day and keep you motivated to meet your goal.

  3. Establish a routine. It's important that your routine allows you to achieve your goals. If you can establish a routine it will soon turn into habit, and you won't have to make the choices of reaching your goal. They will just be part of you are and what you do each day. For example, if you're trying to lose weight you might start with your diet. Changing the way you eat and what you eat takes time and hard work. You have to consciously think about it every day; you have to change your eating habits at every meal. As you continue to do this each day, your routines become your habits, and soon your eating habits won't be new anymore, they will be what your regular meals.

  4. Find support. Some people don't like to share their goals with anyone just in case they don't measure up to them. It make sit much easier to achieve a goal when you share it with friends and family members. They can be your support during the more difficult times and help keep you motivated to doing well and reaching your goal. So don't be afraid to tell other people about it so they can encourage you to keep trying.

  5. Track your progress and get feedback. "Tracking progress is an essential step to goal attainment because it helps you know how to adjust performance in order to attain your target. Tracking is a motivational strategy because it often involves receiving unpleasant feedback about how badly you are doing." (Dr. Raj Persuad, The Motivated Mind.) Tracking your goals not only means getting feedback on how you can do better, but also how great you're doing.

So you can see now why goals are an important part of motivation. Goals are the driving force behind motivation and without them you will find yourself stagnant in your abilities to achieve almost anything.
