Becoming a better co-worker

Work can be difficult and frustrating for everyone, especially if you have a hard time getting along with your co-workers. To make friends at work and become a better co-worker, follow these easy tips:

  • Quit complaining! When it comes to work, no one particularly enjoys it, but they have to do it to make a living. They feel the same work frustrations that you do so they don't want to hear you complain about your job and your work load all the time. The complaints also go about your personal life. If you are the only single one in the office, don't come in and whine about your lousy home life, they don't want to hear about it. They also don't want to hear you complain about your spouse and the other complaints you have. Leave those at home or take them to your shrink's office.


  • You need to have a good work ethic. If you want to get along with your co-workers, you need to pull your weight. Be good at what you do so your co-workers don't have to bail you out all the time. Try to keep the pressure off everyone else. Some easy ways you show others you have a good work ethic is to be on top of your work. Show up to work early, answer your phone promptly, and respond to emails quickly. All these little things will be noticed and appreciated by your co-workers.
  • Be considerate of your co-workers. Don't step on their toes. Be willing to pitch in if they need a little help. Try to make the work environment easier for everyone. Do simple things that show you are thinking of your co-workers like making a new pot of coffee when you finish the last one or restocking the paper towels in the bathroom. Replace the paper in the copy machine and eat your lunch outside so it doesn't stink up the office.
  • Watch your tone. Several office miscommunications can happen from the tone of your voice. Try to avoid talking too loud when you are on the phone, especially if your co-workers can hear you. Be careful when you talk to your co-workers and try not to talk too loud so that everyone else in the office can hear your conversation. Close the door if you need to but always be mindful of your tone.
  • Personal hygiene is an important factor in becoming a good co-worker. Bathing in cologne or perfume is not recommended. Take good care of yourself and be careful not to over do it when it comes to the cologne and perfume.
  • Be positive. When you get to work, you don't have to be Mary Poppins all the time, but it does help to have a cheerful attitude. If you have a frustration with your home life, leave it at home. Don't bring your bad mood to the office, it will infect everyone else and cause them to have a bad day too. Just remember that if you are having some of these troubles, your co-workers probably are too and they really don't want to listen to your complaints.
  • Treat everyone as your equal. It doesn't matter that you may be in a higher ranking position from your co-workers; they still deserve to be treated with respect. Be nice to everyone at the office and don't shun other co-workers because you think you are "above them". Building relationships with your co-workers will turn around to help you out someday, even in situations that aren't work related.

These easy tips can help you build stronger relationships with your co-workers and it will help to make the office environment easier for everyone.
