Sending the kids out to do the yard work together doesn't count as doing it as a family. Parents should go out there with the kids and use that time together. When the kids get to see their parents working hard right along side them, it helps them to know that mom and dad can work hard too. When kids see their parents working hard, it instills in them a work ethic and maybe even a little respect for their parents. Teaching your kids hard work is one of the biggest things you can do for them.
When the hard work is done and the task is complete, there is a great sense of accomplishment. That great feeling makes all of the effort worth it. The feeling of a job well done also helps kids the next time they have a big task ahead of them, they know how it feels to be done and have done a good job. Accomplishment is a great motivator!
If the hard work has to be done alone, it can seem overwhelming. But when the whole family is working together there is not so much to do. Kids learn how to work as a team, to all be working towards a common goal. This gives them a great feeling of unity with their family members. That will be a great growth opportunity for your family.
What better time to talk but when the whole family is working together. You get a chance to recall family memories, laugh all together, and sometimes even cry a little. Time spent together when the conversation is good, can be some of the best times of their lives and yours. What better a time to tell the kids about a special vacation that you are planning or to tell them they are getting another sibling. You can have so much fun talking when you are also engaged in something productive.
This is something any parent can appreciate, when they are busy at work with the family, they don't have the time to get into trouble. Family time, especially spent on a project together, can lessen the opportunities that older children have to get into trouble.
When the hard work is done to better your home, yard, or garden then kids can feel some ownership and pride. But even better than that is when the hard work is done in the service of others. Service projects as a family help kids and parents give back to the world around them. And no one will ever forget the feeling they get when they do something great for someone else.
Involve kids in the planning of vacations. This can seem like hard work at times, but let them give input and listen to it sincerely. When the working part of a vacation is done by all, the trip is enjoyed even more by all. Even if this sounds a little silly, you will be surprised at the extra fun that is added to your vacation. Don't forget, bonding with family is what the vacation is all about.
