If you have recently gotten a promotion to be a manager, you may be worried about the relationships you will have with your employees. It is important to bring strong leadership skills to the table and let your employees know how much you care about them but that you are competent. Here are some easy tips to help you become a good leader:

Tip # 1 - Lead by example

People will follow you if you can set a good example for them. Show up on time and let people see that you care about your job. Employees will follow a person they believe in. Don't do things that will devalue your position like showing up late, leaving early, and slacking off at the office. You need to look good in the eyes of your employees in order to earn their trust and respect.

Tip # 2 - Be positive

It is important to be positive about your job. Sure you'd rather be sun tanning on the beaches of Hawaii, but you need to earn the money to do this! Come to work with a cheery disposition and be positive about your job. If you are happy in your job, it will reflect to your employees.

Get rid of negative behavior at the office quickly. Make sure employees know that sour attitudes and negative behaviors do not belong in the office. Get rid of rumors and other things that cause discontention between staff members. Never air your dirty laundry in public, especially at work. Your employees don't need to find out why you are getting divorced. Leave your personal life at home and focus on your job when you are at work.

Tip # 3 - Take them somewhere

Employees need to know that you have a vision for the company and you plan to take them somewhere. No matter what type of business you work for, you need to show your employees that you want the company to progress and move forward. Come up with some big dreams and goals and give your employees something to look forward to. This also inspires them to work harder as they have the desire to try and dream big and work harder to accomplish the goals you have created.

Tip # 4 - Don't be intimidated

Your employees need to see that you can stare down your fear. Show them that you are not going to be intimidated by any challenge that is in your path. Tackle some of the fear your employees may be having about their jobs. Show them that you have all the answers they are looking for and that you are a great leader.

Tip # 5 - Learn

It is important to spend time learning as a leader. People will look up to you if you have successes and failures. Show your employees how you can learn from mistakes and move forward. When you have failures, people realize that you aren't perfect and you are just like they are and learning too. This will give you a human touch, allowing employees to build better relationships with you.

Tip # 6 - Have fun
A good leader knows that there is a time for work and for play. Have fun with your new job and let your employees relax a little bit. Have a sense of humor with your employees. Let them see that you are a fun person. Laughter is a great way to break the tension in your office and it can help to build strong relationships with your employees. The best part about laughter is that it is contagious and everyone in the office will benefit from it.
