The first basic trait in a healthy relationship is communication. When evaluating your relationships you will want to begin by asking yourself how easy you find it to talk to your partner or your friend. Look at how easy it is to be honest with your friend or partner in any particular subject. A healthy relationship will have you and your partner or friend being as open as you can, listening to what they say and also being able to work out any disagreements that can come up. Keeping things from your partner or friend is unhealthy and will stand in the way of giving you a healthy relationship. Secrets are never good in any relationship.
Your next step in evaluating your relationship to see if it is healthy is to look at the level of respect in the relationship. You and your partner or friend should treat each other with respect. When you respect someone and they respect you it means that you listen to the views and opinions they have and vice versa. Showing and giving respect also means that you share in any responsibilities that is part of your relationship, that you make the big decisions together and that you come to a mutual agreement on any of these issues. Arguments can happen in any relationship but in a healthy relationship the respect will help both parties come to a solution that both can be happy about.
Evaluating your relationship to see if it is healthy will have you looking at the trust that is in the relationship. Trust takes time and effort to build up so it can be destroyed very easily. Being honest with your partner or friend will help you to build that trust. Speaking the truth to each other without fear is also a way to build that trust that is needed in any relationship. Trust in any relationship will help the relationship to grow and stay healthy.
Responsibility is another of the basic traits you will be looking for when you are evaluating your relationships. Both people in the relationship need to accept responsibility. Both individuals need to consider the different aspects of any decision before deciding and acting on those decisions. Being responsible for your self will help you in protecting each other from harm and not blaming each other when things don't go right in the relationship.
Evaluating your relationships to see if they are healthy will have you taking care of yourself. There are two people in any given relationship and both should be taking care of themselves in that particular relationship. Each partner needs to do the things they want to do and still be able to support their partner in their interests and life goals. When taking care of your while supporting your friend or partner is healthy for both people in the relationship.
When evaluating your relationships to see if they are healthy you will want to look for these basic traits. If you feel that you have none of these traits or some of them you should either get help for the relationship or leave the relationship.
