Finding friends in unexpected places

Friendships are a critical part of living a happy life, but sometimes finding friends is not very easy. The following is a look at how you can find friends in unexpected places:
|
|
- Be open to finding friends. People who are judgmental, or who do not give people a chance because they are not the "typical" friend, do not make friends in unexpected places. If you want to be able to make friends in unexpected places you have to be open to the possibilities of unexpected friends. Not all of your friends are going to be beautiful, rich, or smart. They may not even be the same age as you. Never judge a book by its cover, or a person by their appearance, social standing, etc. It might surprise you who you will be friends with if you do not put stipulations on who you will be friends with.
- Try. This may sound really simple, but the fact is almost everyone would be happy to get more friends or new friends. People enjoy having other people to talk to, hang out with, and befriend. So, if you want to make new friends, sometimes the only thing you have to do is make the effort. You can make friends in many unexpected places. For example, you could make friends while waiting in line at the grocery store. The people standing around could become your new best friends if you make the effort to strike up a conversation, find common ground, and exchange some sort of contact information so you can continue growing a friendship.
- Be yourself. One of the important things about finding friends in unexpected places is to look for friends that you will get along with. If you act like you are wealthy, and you are not, or if you act like you are athletic, and you are not, or whatever it is you fake, you will not pursue a friendship because it means exposing yourself as a liar.
Finding friends does not require that you be part of a team, a group, or anything else. You do not have to find your only friends from school, church groups, or work. It is possible to make friends everywhere you go. Strike up a conversation with someone. Be polite, show interest in their life, and be the kind of person someone would want to be friends with, and chances are you will make friends. You can make friends with the other parents in your child's school class when you go to pick them up from school each day. You can make friends in the grocery store by being friendly in line. You can make friends while in the doctor waiting room, or even when you are stuck in traffic if you make an effort, and aren't afraid to put yourself out there a little.
Friendships enrich life and make it more enjoyable, so look for friendships in unexpected places and with unexpected people, and you will find it.
