Getting to know your neighbors

Getting to know your neighbors is not as hard as it may seem. If you have recently moved to a new area or if you have new neighbors now is the best time to get to know them and create a neighborly friendship.
Let's take a look at some tips for getting to know your neighbors when you are the new neighbor on the block.

  1. Take the time to introduce yourself. You can take a treat or small gift if you would like. Make the first introduction short and simple. They are way too busy unpacking to have much of a conversation.

  2. Invite the new neighbors to neighborhood events. Book clubs, game nights, and quilting clubs are all good things to invite someone to.

  3. Begin an annual block party. What better time to create a new tradition than when there are new neighbors. Invite as many neighbors as you can. You may end up meeting other neighbors that you weren't always familiar with.

  4. Invite new neighbors over for dinner. This helps them get to know you at first. You can always invite one or two other neighbors at the same time.

  5. Start a weekly or monthly game night. This helps all your neighbors get to know each other. Bunco nights are one of the most popular types of game nights around many American neighborhoods.

  6. Say hi every time you see the new neighbors. The more you say hi and are available to your new neighbors the more likely it is that they will be friendly towards you.

  7. Be friendly whenever you see the new neighbors around your town. This helps them feel welcome and creates a good sense of community.

Getting to know your neighbors is a lot like going back to school. As the new neighbor you will have to put yourself out there to be noticed. As an existing neighbor you need to try and make the new neighbors feel as welcome as possible.
