As another gift giving season dawns you may be wondering exactly what can you get Grandma or Aunt Agnes or any other older family member as a gift. You will want your gift to be something that is fun, unique and most importantly something they do not already have. Gift giving to older family members can be a challenge since many senior citizens have limited space to store things or have already accumulated the things they want. But with a little creativity and planning you can still give that birthday or other holiday gift that will really wow your gift recipient and let them know how much you really do care about them. Here are some tips on how to choose a gift for an older family member-

Before choosing your gifts consider the lifestyle of your gift recipient. Is your senior family member someone who is still on the go or someone who is now mostly housebound? Will they want something that takes up already limited space or something that can be used up completely? Of course if space and money are not concerns for your gift recipient than the choice of gift may be easier but for a senior with limited space and income the decision on what to give may be a little trickier. For most seniors their golden years mean living in a smaller space with less income. So be considerate when choosing gifts that take up a lot of space require additional maintenance or added money to support and most of all make sure it fits the lifestyle of your gift recipient.

For the senior with adequate income but little left over for luxuries consider-
1. Gift cards-
This is a great gift for the senior who would like to try that extra special restaurant or even go out and see a movie. Everyone loves being able to have fun on someone else's dime. Just make sure that your gift card does not have an expiration date so your senior gift recipient can enjoy it at their leisure.

2. Flowers-Fresh flowers delivered to your door can be a wonderful surprise for anyone! For the senior who spends a lot of time at home the arrival of fresh flowers can be the ultimate gift. Showing your loved one you are thinking of them at the holidays can be done in a countless number of ways when you send them flowers.

3. Pictures-There is hardly a grandma, aunt or even some grandpas that wouldn't love the idea of receiving a photo album filled with pictures of their nearest and dearest. While the idea of a traditional photo album is always a good one for the high tech senior consider a DVD full of pictures that can be viewed on the TV or computer.

For the senior who needs some help consider sending one of these options for your next gift-
1. A maid or yard service that is paid in full for several months can be a huge help to the senior who needs some assistance.
If Grandpa objects simply throw your hands in the air and tell him there is nothing you can do since you have already paid in full!

2. A grocery gift card can help stretch limited income or better yet a delivery from a grocery service.
While this needs to be handled with sensitivity and care this can also be a welcome gift.

3. Nothing says you care like the gift of a visit from a loved one.
If you really want to give a memorable gift go visit your loved one and really spend the time to visit. Picking up the check for dinner out, your hotel stay or any other incidentals can also lessen the stress of additional people in your chosen senior's home.
