How to deal with a bad neighbor

No matter if you live in an apartment building or a house you are going to have neighbors all around you. When you live in an apartment building you are going to be sharing walls with your neighbors, same thing holds true for people who live in a duplex. If you live in a house you will not be sharing a wall with your neighbors, but you can still be affected by their behavior. What happens if you have a bad neighbor, whether they are annoying, noisy or rude, is that they tend to get under your skin, they tend to drive you insane.

If you have a neighbor who drives you insane that does not mean that, you have to simply, pack up and move to a house in the suburbs. Chances are that even if you do this you are going to end up with another neighbor that drives you insane. If you have a bad neighbor, the best thing that you can do is to follow these guidelines to handle the situation effectively.
Number one: Approach your neighbor
Most people tend to stay away from this tactic because they are afraid of confrontation, especially if the neighbor is a stranger to them. One of the best ways to get over your fear of approaching your neighbors is to not view the talk as a confrontation. What you are going to want to do is to think of it as a friendly conversation. You want to keep in mind that your goal is to not cause a fight with your neighbor, what you want to do is talk to your neighbor about what is going on in the hopes that you can both work something out. If your neighbor does get confrontational, it is important that you not take the bait, simply remain calm, and explain to them that you are not here to fight. If your neighbor continues to be unreasonable, you can simply walk away.
Number two: Talk to your landlord
If you live in an apartment or a rental property, you can talk to your property owner about the problems that are going on because you have the right to live in your apartment without being disturbed. If the problem is more than you can handle or talking to your neighbor didn't work, you might need your property owner to put an end to it. Your property owner can go to your neighbor and tell them that certain rules are enforced for a reason, such as quiet time after a certain time of night or smoking in the hallways. In some cases, problems arise that neither tenant is at fault for, so you will need to both approach the property owner to see if they can make adjustments to help keep both parties happy.
Number three: Take self-help measures
If you have tried talking to your neighbors and the property owner and thing still haven't improved, you can take some self-help measures to fix your situation. These self-help measures are also a good thing to try before calling the police because that can cause even more problems. One thing that you can try doing is fighting the noise with white noise. Many times white noise that you create can help to cancel out any offending sounds from an inconsiderate neighbor. You can turn on a fan, play a CD, or even buy a "white noise machine" to help reduce the effects of the noise coming from your neighbor. You can also wear earplugs at night or while you are reading to ensure that you sleep soundly or are able to get the peace, you need to read the entire book.
