Lack of empathy is created from selfishness. You are showing the other person that you do not care about their needs and you only care about your needs. Quite often lack of empathy means that you do not care to know anything about your partner but you still want them to love and care for you with deep devotion. Are you truly taking the time to listen to your partner and to show them that you love them? Are you acting like a lover or a dictator? Many relationships with a lack of empathy often have struggles of domination and abuse. The other spouse may feel like you are ruling over them and they are feeling forced to stay in the relationship. This is no way to have a marriage or any type of relationship and you need to get into counseling soon and do what you can to change your behavior.
If a couple doesn't recognize that there is a major problem and they are lacking empathy, it can lead to destruction of not only the relationship but of self-esteem and confidence. It can completely destroy a person and it needs to be taken care of quickly in order to avoid such painful feelings.
For many couples, lack of empathy occurs because one party has fallen in love with another person. You might also see that it happens when they are tired of a certain behavior you have and they no longer want to deal with it. Having a behavioral disorder like bipolar or depression is something that must be taken care of quickly or it will lead to a failed relationship as it destroys you and takes its toll on your partner and your overall relationship. Look for the tell-tell signs that show why your partner may have lack of empathy for you. Are you constantly nagging them and pushing them into the arms of another person? When you lose respect and love for one another, it makes it very difficult to treat each other nicely and to even have the desire to treat each other nicely.
Be careful of the way you treat your partner. Your children will learn from your behaviors and if they see that you are not loving and respectful to your partner, it will have an impact on them and can cause them to be rude to others in their life. They too may struggle with relationships in the future because they saw how poorly you treated each other.
Sit down with your spouse and talk over your issues. Remind one another of why you love each other and discuss ways in which you can convey this love to each other. You need to look for ways that will allow you to rebuild trust in the relationship and to help you both find peace in it. Therapy is always advisable for a relationship that is on the rocks and for a couple that no longer cares and loves one another the way they should. Spend alone time together so you can have a chance to talk and to focus on one another again, this too can go a long way in rebuilding your marriage.
