Most people desire strong family relationships, but aren't sure how to develop them. Many parents desperately want their children to be friends with one another, but end up playing referee just trying to keep their kids from fighting. It can be really difficult to spend quality time together as parents and children, but it's very important to make sure this time happens. Enjoying one another's company is the way to make any family function well, whether you have one child or 12 children. Here are some tips on how to make family time more enjoyable.

It's important that you make sure family time occurs on a regular basis and as often as possible. The more time you spend together with your children, the more comfortable this will be. Your children will begin to get along better and develop stronger friendships if they spend time with one another. To do this, you can try setting aside a specific time for this purpose. On top of summer vacation and other annual times together, try to devote at least one night a week to family time. Make sure that both parents and all children are available to attend. Having a set evening to spend together as family night will ensure that this happens. It's all well and good to say you'll spend time together, but it is a lot less likely to happen if you don't actually devote a time to doing so.

Another important tip is to make sure that when you're with your family, you're completely devoted to what's going on. Projects for work, homework and other outside activities should be banned from family night. It should be a fun time that's truly spent enjoying one another's company. This is especially important for the parents. If you're continuing to do your work at family night and taking calls every five minutes, this sets an example for your children. If you don't respect the time and value its importance, neither will your children. Show them how important they are to you by devoting to them an entire evening...maybe even turn your phone off. It will eliminate distractions, set a good example about the value of families for your children, and maybe for once, give you a time off from the things that keep you running throughout most of the day.

Although it's really fun for your kids to bring their friends along on family activities, don't let this happen every time. If you want your children to learn to be friends with each other, let them really
spend time together. Bringing friends along will put them in different directions, spending time with their school buddies instead of each other. Don't be afraid to have your time together solely include your family.

Another idea on how to increase the enjoyment you get from your family time is to plan activities that everyone enjoys. Make sure you actually have activities planned. Don't just hope it will fall together and then end up watching a movie and sleeping the day away. Just like you would plan a date around something that you can do to have fun together, plan your family activities with a lot of thought about what all members of your family enjoy. Trying new and creative things is fun, and will make the time together special for your children. Showing your family members that you've put thought and time into them shows respect and love.

Finally, remember not to stress out too much. If thing don't go perfectly, it's not the end of the world. Sometimes the most memorable experiences are the ones when things don't go according to plan. If you have a child who you don't think is participating enough, don't pressure them. Continue having fun, and when they realize what they're missing out on, they'll come around. Just relax and have fun!
