Learning how to work in groups
Working in groups is part of everyday work. Practically every job requires you to work in some sort of group. Many universities focus on the importance of working in groups and they encourage students to join study groups or work on projects together. Working in groups teaches students and employees how to get along with different personalities. This helps them to become better students or co-workers. Here are some tips that may help you learn how to work in groups.
First, recognize that it isn't always easy to work with others. You may have an easy-going personality that gets along with everyone, but your co-workers might not. If this is your first experience working in a group, be flexible.
You cannot be too stubborn or else you will butt heads with most of your co-workers or fellow students. Students are typically graded as s group instead of as individual effort so it is important to pull your weight. Employees are held responsible as a group and as individuals so it is important not to let your co-workers down by not doing your part.

Second, learn to trust in your abilities. You may be the type of person to second guess yourself a lot, don't do this in front of your fellow students or co-workers. Be confident in your ability to make a decision, but don't be too stubborn to listen to advice or constructive criticism from your co-workers or fellow students.
Third, learn how to communicate with others. Working in groups is hard, but it can be made easier if you will spend time communicating with your fellow students or co-workers. Truly listen to their input and repeat a few things they have said so they know you are listening. If you disagree, be sure to point out the positive aspects of their suggestion and then suggest a different route that may enhance what they have already suggested. This way you won't put them down for their idea and you are trying to find a way to come to a mutual decision.
Communication is all about listening and talking. Don't just sit there and let everyone else run the group, you need to speak up too! Let everyone else hear some of your thoughts, but try not to take over the group and make everyone follow you. Remember, this is a group effort, not just your idea and 5 people to help you make it come to life.
Fourth, manage your time wisely. When it comes to working in groups, it can be easy to get off track with some of your own ideas or your co-workers ideas. Try to avoid brainstorming sessions that last for too long or else you won't have time to get any work done. Once you make a decision, stick with it and move forward.
Keep track of your time so everyone can move onto their other work or school responsibilities. When you are working in a group, you also need to devote some individual time to your part of the project. Make sure to set enough time in your day to work on the project or you will frustrate your co-workers or employees when you come to the meeting empty handed.
Finally, you must have good organizational skills to work as a team. Come prepared to every meeting and make sure you have an agenda in place for everyone else. Even if you aren't the office team leader, keep a record of some of the things you covered from the last meeting and quickly re-cap them with everyone else, this will help everyone to stay on track and work towards completing the project on time.
