Nosy friends

busfriends30396999-1.jpgThere are times when you may have something you just don't want to share with anyone else. When others start to pry or get nosy about things that we really don't want to share, it can sure put a damper on the moment and make it more difficult to deal with the situation. Here are some tips for dealing with nosy friends.

One of the first things you can do to avoid nosy people or dealing with situations where friends are being nosy is to start with your own habits and how nosy you are personally. If you care constantly trying to find out the juicy tidbits of other people's lives, why on earth would you expect people to treat you any differently? When you are nosy with others, you are sending the signal that it's part of your life and something that is acceptable. If you want to have privacy, you also need to allow others the same right and stop when they ask or not be nosy in the first place. Many people find that when they are willing to do the same things they expect from others, that their relationships improve generally and that they can really sort out who are their true friends and who is just along for the ride.

Another important thing to consider when you are dealing with nosy people is that they may not even realize they are being nosy or getting on your nerves. This can be a particularly awkward situation when you get upset about something they believe is completely innocent. It's even worse when you are clearly upset and your friend has no indication of why. Feelings can really get hurt when you don't communicate well. Honest is very important when you are dealing with other people and your relationship with them. One approach that you can take is to simply ask them why they are asking you so much about your own situation. They may not realize that they are offending you or that you don't want to answer the questions they are fielding. True friends will express their concern and let you know that they want to know because they care about you and want the best for you. These types of situations can be very awkward and so you need to pay close attention to how they react and what signals they are sending to you at the same time.

There are some people out there, even those who are true friends, who may just be clueless about some things and they just won't realize they are prying until you tell them so. In a situation like this, it is appropriate to say something like, "I'm not comfortable with the questions you are asking. Why do you need to know so much about ..." This is sometimes a difficult conversation to have, but can actually end up strengthening your relationship with friends. It will bring an added measure of understanding to your relationship and make it that much deeper.

Having nosy friends or acquaintances is something that most people will have to deal with at some point in their lives and that everyone should know how to deal with. Every situation will be different and you have to take the comments of each person you interact with in context of what is happening and why they may be doing what they are. Seek honest relationships with people that feel like they can share when needed and that you can share with when you need a shoulder to lean on. Finding the best friends isn't always the easiest thing to do and can really take a long time, but the value of trusting relationships is very important and will help you to live a more fulfilling life.
