Shyness and loneliness can force us to miss out on so many relationships in life. Many times people experience shyness and loneliness because of their inner struggles. They often suffer from low self-esteem and they just can't seem to muster up the courage to get out of the house and meet new people. Having low self-esteem can be devastating and it can stop you from doing many things in life like applying for a new job, going on a date, or simply meeting your neighbors.

Loneliness can cause health problems to occur. Obesity, depression, high blood pressure, and anxiety are often directly related to loneliness. Several studies have found that people with friends and a strong social group actually live longer, healthier lives. So what can you do about your problems with loneliness and shyness? Here are some tips that may help:

Tip # 1 - Courage

It is hard to get the courage to speak to new people. However, you need to muster up the courage to overcome loneliness and shyness or else you will spend a lifetime living this way. You can get courage by setting small goals for yourself each day. One day, muster up the courage to say hello to your neighbors and introduce yourself to them. Another day, try sitting next to some co-workers at lunch and carry on a conversation with them. Lastly, let some of your close friends know you want to meet new people and ask for their help. Get ready to hit some clubs and social areas because your friends have probably been waiting for this phone call for years!

Tip # 2 - Go Online

If you are scarred to meet people in person, try meeting new people online. Develop friendships with them on social networking sites like Facebook. It's a great way to start up a great friendship that is based on mutual interests. As you get to know more about this person, you can offer to meet them in person.

Tip # 3 - Read

A great way to overcome loneliness is to keep your mind active. Loneliness is common amongst elderly individuals, especially those that have lost their close friends or their spouse. To stave off loneliness, try reading a new book each week. It's a great way to keep your mind active. Reading has also been shown to prevent dementia and Alzheimer's. Reading also encourages you to have an imagination, which is a great way to attract others. People want to be around you if you are creative and imaginative, not dull and boring.

Tip # 4 - Don't have big expectations

It is quite common for people to have a hard time making new friends because they set their expectations too high. If you are constantly looking for people that are going to make the "perfect" friends, you will be searching forever. Learn how to accept people for who they are. Younger people have problems making friends because they watch movies and television shows that make friendship look perfect all the time. This is why some people cannot learn how to make friendships because real people don't follow scripted dialogue and not everything works out perfectly. Live in reality, not in a dream world.

Tip # 5 - Get out there

Finally, if you really want to overcome loneliness and shyness, you need to force yourself to get out there. Stop avoiding social situations and start introducing yourself to people. Check your local paper to see what types of social activities interest you. Check with your local church to find out if there are some gatherings going on where you can make friends and meet new people.
