The Boss Relationship

Everyone has a different personality and a different work style, so blending those into one cohesive work environment can be challenging at best and impossible at worst. If you are having a hard time getting along with your boss, there may be some tricks to dealing with his or her personality type.

Controller

Controller boss personality types are the most common. They are leaders, planners, problem solvers, good in a crisis and work well under pressure. The problem most employees have with a controller type personality boss is that they can be micro-managers because controllers are not very good at delegating responsibility and like to oversee how things are done personally. They are always right, and even if they know they are wrong, they'll never admit it to you. They are quick to make decisions and rarely have to think things through for long.

How to deal: Controller personality type bosses are actually relatively easy to deal with. Because they are problem solvers, if you approach them with your problem with them, most of the time they are willing to sit down, talk about it, and come up with a solution. Don't argue with them and if they are being a micro-manager tell them you'll bring your work to them for approval when it is done. Once they know they can rely on you, they'll leave you alone.

Promoter

If you are in sales, you may run into a promoter personality type boss. Promoters are driven to accomplish, animated, and as the name implies, very good at promoting their product. They want to feel important. However, they are not goal oriented people and often do not follow through, which can cause issues for you in the work environment. They use their charm and emotion to get what they want rather than reason. Their emotions can shift very quickly.

How to deal: The best way to approach this boss personality type is to be proactive. Because promoters don't often follow through, you can act as their backup. Delegate the finishing responsibilities to yourself and allow them to be the dreamer and go-getter that they are. Give them compliments and help them feel important and they will treat you right.

Analyst

The analyst type bosses are slow decision makers and sometimes don't come to a decision at all. They are very thorough and like information to help in the decision process. The are cautious and methodical in how they work. They don't take many risks. They love crunching the numbers but rarely do anything with them. The lack of decision making can drive their employees crazy.

How to deal: An analyst personality is best dealt with by giving them the information they want before they ask for it. With the information you give them, give them solutions and possible outcomes. Never push them to a decision or it may backfire. Because they are so cautious, show empathy and use your charm to get the decision process moving.

Supporter

The supporter personality type is rarely a problem in the workplace because they abhor conflict. The only problem they may cause is that they hate risk. The are servers, quite likeable, and try to focus on others.

How to deal: Don't start conflict with this boss personality type and you will do well. If they can find ways to serve you, allow them to. Compliment them and help them feel useful.
