When to call the police when fighting with your neighbors

Do you seem to have neighbors that do nothing but fight with each other and with other neighbors? Are they always yelling, screaming, and causing huge scenes? Does the fighting escalate to where you think somebody is being attacked or they are about to be attacked? Most of the time we tend to think that what goes on in somebody else's home is none of our business, but as concerned neighbors it is natural for us to worry about our neighbor's safety. This brings up the question when is it o.k. for you to call the police when your neighbors are fighting.

Obviously if you see people, getting into a physical altercation you will need to call the police because that can easily get out of hand. The problem is that when you do not see people fighting, but only hear them fighting, you are going to need to call the police based on what you hear. If you think that things are getting out of hand it is in your best interest to call the police, especially if you live in an apartment building. The reason for this is that all too often in an apartment setting when the fights turn violent innocent bystanders get hurt. Therefore, by calling the police, even if nobody gets hurt, it will also ensure that you will not get hurt either.
However, if you do call the police when your neighbors are fighting you are going to need to be prepared for your neighbors being upset with you. In many cases, if your neighbors find out it was you who called the police they can get very angry with you, which can lead to further trouble. The biggest problem that this can cause is you and your neighbors not getting along, which if you guys were friends before the police were called it is going to be a bigger problem. If you do happen to be friends with your neighbors and you call the police on them the one thing that you should do is talk to your neighbors and explain why you felt that you had to call the police. If you are good friends they just might understand your reasoning, you can also tell them that if the situation were reversed you would have wanted them to do the same thing.
One of the problems about calling the police on your neighbors when they are fighting is you can face repercussions from your neighbors. Most often, when you call the police they are going to ask for your name and phone number, so that they can talk to you afterwards about what happened and what made you call the police or perhaps what you had seen. If you do leave your name with the police, what happens is that if your neighbors ask who called the police the police will reveal to them who called. Of course, you can also choose to remain anonymous when you call the police.
If you choose to remain anonymous when calling the police you will need to tell them that you do not want your name divulged when the police are on the scene, but you will still need to leave your name and number for the police. While they will not contact you when they are on the scene, they will ask that you come down to the station later to give your side of the story. This can be very helpful if one party decides to press charges, which is very often not the case.
The one thing to remember when calling the police on your neighbors for fighting is to use your best judgment. Sometimes it is better to get involved because you never know when you might save somebody's life.
